PRERNA has formed an informal consortium of NGOs in kanpur who have adopted schools and interacted with the eduction department right from the BSA to the Education Minister of UP , for recognition and empowering of NGOs who are looked upon as donors and not partners by the system. In this meaningful and longterm importance struggle, PRERNA got its first victory as the local administration issued a circular to all schools elaborating the powers.
We have developed the government school at Gujaini B block, as a model school. When we took over this school , there were only 35-40 children here and one shikshamitra of government who was later transferred to another school. The following efforts have been made to bring up this school to the level of good private schools :
prerna teachers, one or more as required are appointed in each appointed school and work full time periodwiseclass rotation.
Tables - benches have been provided , earlier children used to sit on mats on the floor.
Area survey and door to door contact has led to increase of student strength by 2-3 times in most schools.
Swings have been installed in three schools.
Submersible pump/hand pump repairing fordrinking water.
Illegal encroachements ( one family was running a shop from a shack here ) were removed.
The whole premises was a garbage yard which has been cleaned with the help of JCBs and trucks.
A lawn has been developed in the whole front side area which has been cleaned up and levelled.
Proper gate has been installed, as otherwise stray animals and local anti social elements used to infest the place.
Boundary wall has been raised to ensure that tresspassers do not cause damage to school property.
Surrounding houses had opened their back door and school premises and used to dump garbage there, these have been closed.
Electricity connection has been taken in some schooland applied in others.
Bimonthly tests are conducted.
Each students quarterly progress is further recorded in excel sheets by co-ordinators.
Cultural programmes are held time to time.
Parents teachers meetings are held every month and documented.
An annual festival was organized in which the children got the opportunity to perform before a huge audience which boosted their confidence.
Regular availability of books, note books, pencils etc are ensured.

For the first time in history of kanpur, children of government schools celebrated their annual function " AB HAMARI BARI HAI " on 11th march 2011 and got an opportunity to perform on merchants chamber stage in front of dignitaries like the MLA, Mr RP Kushwaha, the DM Kanpur , Mr Hariom , the BSA and many other distinguished citizens and industrialists of Kanpur. The children were as confident as any private convent school children and to the amazement of the audience performed flawlessly.
